The Real Freedom
What are the demands that our freedom makes on us? Our first duty is to ourselves. I don't say this is any spirit of selfishness. If a free people do not maintain their own freedom, they disgrace the fair name of free men and women all over the world. But the maintenance of freedom requires constant vigilance. Liberty does not descend upon a people, a people must raise themselves to it. It is a fruit that must be earned before it can be enjoyed. That freedom means freedom only from foreign domination is an outworn idea. It is not merely the government that should be free, but people themselves should be free and no freedom has any real value for the common men or women unless it also means freedom from want, freedom from ignorance. This is the main task which confronts us if we are to take our rightful place in the modern world. We cannot hold the clock back and, therefore, it is we who must go forward at a double pace bending all our resources and all our energies to great purpose.

প্রকৃত স্বাধীনতা
আমাদের নিকট স্বাধীনতার দাবিসমূহ কী কী? আমাদের প্রথম কর্তব্য হলো আমাদের নিজেদের প্রতি। কোনো প্রকার স্বার্থপরের মতো আমি এ কথা বলছি না। স্বাধীন জনগণ যদি নিজেদের স্বাধীনতা রক্ষা করে না চলে তবে তারা গোটা বিশ্বের মুক্ত নর-নারীর সুন্দর নামের অবমাননা করে থাকে। কিন্তু স্বাধীনতা রক্ষার জন্য দরকার সদা সতর্ক দৃষ্টি। জনগণের উপর স্বাধীনতা আপনা আপনি নেমে আসে না, জনগণকে তার জন্য জাগ্রত হতে হয়। এটা একটা ফল যা ভোগ করার আগে অর্জন করতে হয়। স্বাধীনতা বলতে বৈদেশিক আক্রমণ হতে মুক্তিকে বুঝায়- এটা একটা সেকেলে ধারণা। কেবল সরকারই স্বাধীন হবে না; জনগণও স্বাধীন হবে। সাধারণ জনগণের কাছে স্বাধীনতার কোনো মূল্য থাকবে না; যদি তারা অভাব অনটন ও অজ্ঞতা থেকে মুক্ত না হয়। আধুনিক বিশ্বে যদি আমরা যথাযোগ্য স্থান লাভ করতে চাই তাহলে এটিই হবে আমাদের প্রধান কাজ। আমরা ঘড়ির কাঁটাকে পেছনে ঘুরাতে পারি না। সুতরাং আমাদেরকে আমাদের শক্তি সামর্থ্য দিয়ে দ্বিগুণ গতিতে এগিয়ে যেতে হবে।

Ans: Summarising:
Freedom is our birth right. It does not descend upon a people. It should be earned. To protect freedom is more difficult than to achieve it. Freedom does not mean the freedom of the government and the people only, it also means freedom of the common people from want, ignorance and diseases.
