The Importance of Prayer
The importance of prayer may be judged from the following facts-that it was the first duty enjoined in the Holy Hadith; that though prayer and Zakat are often mentioned together in the Holy Quran, prayer always takes precedence and that the keeping up of prayer is the most frequently repeated injunction of the Holy Quran. It has also been generally recognised as the first and foremost duty of a Muslim. There are several reasons why prayer has been given this importance. It is really the first step in the onward progress of man, and yet it is also his Miraj, his highest spiritual ascent. Prayer keeps man away from evil and thus enables him to attain his perfection. It helps him to realize the Divine in him, and that realization not only urges him to do disinterested service for humanity but also makes him attain the highest degree of moral and spiritual perfection. Prayer is also the means of levelling all differences of rank- colour and nationality and the means of bringing about unity among men which is the necessary basis of a living civilization.

নামাযের গুরুত্ব
নিচের ঘটনাগুলো থেকে নামাযের গুরুত্ব অনুধাবন করা যায়। যেমন : পবিত্র হাদিসের বর্ণনানুযায়ী এটিই প্রথম করণীয় বিষয়। আর যদিও পবিত্র স্বরআনে নামায এবং যাকাতকে একত্রে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে, নামাযকে সর্বদা অগ্রাধিকার দেওয়া হয়েছে, আর বারবার পবিত্র কুরআনে সালাত কায়েম করার নির্দেশ দেয়া হয়েছে। প্রকৃতপক্ষে সালাতকে একজন মুসলিমের প্রথম এবং প্রধান কর্তব্য হিসেবে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে। নামাযকে এতটা গুরুত্ব দেওয়ার বেশ কিছু কারণ রয়েছে। নামায প্রকৃতপক্ষে মানুষের দৈহিক এবং আধ্যাত্মিক উন্নতির প্রথম সোপান, এমনকি এটা মুসলমানদের জন্য মিরাজস্বরূপ। নামায মানুষকে পাপ কাজ থেকে বিরত রাখে, এর ফলে সে পূর্ণতা লাভ করে। এটা তাকে প্রভু সম্পর্কে ধারণা প্রদানে সহায়তা করে, যা তাকে মানুষের জন্য নিঃস্বার্থভাবে কাজ করতে উদ্বুদ্ধই করে না; বরং তাকে নৈতিক এবং আধ্যাত্মিক পূর্ণতা সাধনের সর্বোচ্চ পর্যায়ে উন্নীত হতে উপযোগী করে তোলে। নামায জাতি, বর্ণ, গোষ্ঠী নির্বিশেষে সকল ভেদাভেদ ঘুচিয়ে সমতা আনয়ন করে। এর ফলে মানুষের মধ্যে ঐক্য জাগ্রত হয়, যা উন্নত সভ্যতার ভিত্তি।
